Supporting Action Through the Changemaker Program

We are excited to continue expanding our service work this year with the development of the Changemaker Program, which is aimed at supporting student leadership and service opportunities within and outside the school walls by developing robust community relationships and establishing a new weekly middle school Service Lab class. Live Oak students have long applied their skills and passions toward service work, and this year we are continuing to integrate service into our curriculum in both lower and middle school, digging into exploring our individual and collective WHYs and refining our approach to service with a “listen to learn” attitude, intending to uplift the work that the community is already doing.
This year, in addition to my role teaching eighth grade humanities, I am formally taking on the title of Changemaker Program Coordinator, through which I am looking to establish a program where we do not simply tell students which causes are “right” or what service projects they “should” be working on, but rather be responsive to their visions for how they can be leaders in their communities and support them in their growing leadership identities.

As we work to develop more authentic, reciprocal relationships with community organizations as potential partners for student service opportunities, I have a request for YOU. If you have any connections with organizations in or around San Francisco who are working in the service realm and might be open to having students (K-8) support their work, whether physically in the field, asynchronously behind the scenes, or anywhere in between, please let me know! You can send me an email or fill out this form and I’ll follow up with you. Also, we want to foster the powerful impact that our parent/guardian community has on our students, so please reach out to me if you are interested in mentoring students in service. Thank you!
